Anxious about environmental problems, Eizo SAKATA realises work in collaboration with the nature. He creates “work in situ” following the principle to the letter: inspired by the place, he construct objets with the materials found on the spot and set it up in the same environment. Therefore it is the creation without prepared project in advance, it’s a kind of improvisation with the time and the space. Practicing this approach, he developed the attitude that he calls “Active Passivity”. Passivity, because his work depends totally on what exist outside of him. The environment leads him towards final result, the shape is already inside of found materials, and he presents it respecting the nature. However, in order to conceive the works, he must be always attentive and ready to receive what is offered by surroundings. That is to say, it is the passivity but in the very active state. He considers this passivity is even the source of my creation. Not only his work expresses the reflection on the nature, the man and environment; but also it is the vehicle of this attitude or philosophy.

Born in Japan, Sakata studied engineering. He lives and works since 1983 in France and engages professionally in artistic creation since 1987. He participated to residence programs mainly in France, and also in Japan, Ghana and Uzbekistan.

Cone(s)

"A squirrel kids me by falling down pine cones, as well as cutting several threads of my work."

The place where Sakata's work now hangs may be the safest place nearby.

Sakata wanted to make something that associates him with American Indians . . .
