Introduction

Applications to the I-Park residency program are processed through an online submission system.  By clicking on the link below, you will be connected to the application form and the screen for uploading your work samples.  If you are new to this system, you will first be asked to set up an account.  Please be certain that the address you enter is your current mailing address and that the e-mail address you enter is for an account that you check regularly.  These addresses will be our primary means of communicating with you.  If you already have an account, please click on the Account link and check that your information is current.

Please read the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document before applying (click here for a pdf file).  That way, you can determine if the I-Park program is a good fit for you.

The application fee is $30.00 and payments may be made by major credit or debit card.  This fee helps to defray the cost of the independent selection panels.

It may be helpful to log-in to the system at this time to get familiar with its structure.  To do so, click on the link at the end of the instructions.  But please come back and read this material carefully before beginning the application process.  For a pdf of the instructions, click here.

Selecting the Correct Program/Discipline

Each of the major creative disciplines supported by I-Park appears as a separate program.  In fact, there is but one multi-disciplinary residency ‘program’ in 2012.  Artists from the various disciplines share the facility during each session.  However, each program/discipline has its own specialized application form and the work samples are adjudicated by separate selection panels.  Please be absolutely certain that you select the appropriate program/discipline so that your materials will receive the most fair-minded and intelligent appraisal.  For 2012, I-Park has organized juries for the following programs/disciplines: Visual Arts, Music Composition/Sound Sculpture/Design, Creative Writing, Moving Image and Landscape/Garden Design.

Inter-disciplinary artists are welcome to apply for a residency at I-Park.  However, you will need to select the program/discipline that best captures the major sensibility and thrust of your creative practice.  You should be thinking primarily about which jury’s expertise would be best suited to a proper appreciation of your work samples.

Expressiones Program

Expressiones is a program that arises from a partnership with the New London (Connecticut) based Expressiones Cultural Center .  Residencies are offered to visual artists only from a select group of Latin American countries.  While Expressiones artists are integrated into I-Park’s multi-disciplinary residency program, there are some additional benefits that the Expressiones Cultural Center contributes, including a gallery exhibition.  Click here for details.

Submitting Your Sample Materials

Uploading your work samples occurs in two steps.  First, you provide detailed information on the specific works you intend to submit (Step 6).  Then, in Step 7, you will upload the individual files.  In Step 6, your descriptions are organized as Upload 1, Upload 2, etc.  Please be certain that you use identical Upload number references in these two steps so that the actual files you submit match up with the descriptive material you have provided.  You will be asked for the Upload number when you complete the Add Titles and Descriptions box.  Note that for the Visual Arts discipline, you do not provide detailed information on your work in Step 6 so the requirement for the proper referencing of the Upload numbers does not apply.

For all disciplines except for Visual Arts and Landscape/Garden Design, you will be required to submit what is referred to as a Preview File for your Upload 1.  The first round of the selection process will involve a review of your Preview File only with specific restrictions on the amount of material you may submit.   This file should consist of your most compelling work.

For visual artists, when providing dimensions of physical works in the Add Titles and Descriptions box, use imperial units of measure (feet, inches).

You are allowed some flexibility in terms of the amount of material you may submit.  However, in the pursuit of fairness, the form instructs you as to the overall limits that apply and the system will not allow you to upload files exceeding certain size limitations.  If your uploads are not accepted by the system, you may need to re-size them to conform to these limits.  IMPORTANT: in the Visual Arts discipline, each upload needs to be a single image of an artwork.  Do not upload multiple or compound images within that file.  For the other disciplines, do not combine materials from different works into a single file.  In terms of the attitude of the typical I-Park selection panel, less is more.  Keep your submission tight and clearly focused. .

Bear in mind that, for all visual content, the selection panelists will primarily be evaluating your materials on a computer screen so you should optimize your images for viewing at that scale.

Note that in Step 7, Add Media, there are important instructions at the top of the page.  If you do not see these instructions, you will need to click on the Show link at the top of the page.

Optional Audio, Video Files

For Visual Arts, Creative Writing and Music/Sound Sculpture/Design, you are offered the option of submitting an optional audio or video file.  This option is intended to be used only when necessary to highlight some inter- or multi-disciplinary, or other, aspect of your work that cannot be properly conveyed by means of the typical file type used in your discipline.  If you avail yourself of this option, please respect the size limitations indicated and use the Additional Comments section at the end of Step 6 to explain why you decided to submit the optional file.

Eligibility

I-Park fellows are welcome to apply for a return residency.  However, fellows should check the FAQ for current eligibility guidelines before beginning the application process

Survey

The application form includes a short, optional survey.  Although there are reasons why it appears in the middle of the process, we would suggest that you initially skip it and return to it just before you finalize the application process, particularly if you have some thoughts you’d like to share.  Note that survey responses are not visible to selection panelists and are considered confidential.

International Travel Grants

I-Park has a very limited program for providing grants to international artists.  Skip this step if you are not an international artist – or read the eligibility guidelines in the FAQ if you think it might apply to you and you have an interest or need.  Note that the information you provide in this section is not visible to selection panelists and is not taken into consideration in their appraisal of your submission.  A second Grant Committee makes the decision on grants only after the selection process is complete.

Space Provided

In most cases where an application question allows for an extended response, there is a comment indicating the approximate number of words provided for your response (e.g., Limit approximately 150 words). Please do not interpret this as an expectation that we are looking for a response of that length. In all cases, please keep your responses brief and to the point.

Help with Instruction, Applying to the Program

In addition to the tutorials and comprehensive instructions provided at various points throughout the process, if you need technical assistance when working in the system, use the on-screen Help function or contact support@slideroom.com or the Help Desk at slideroom.zendesk.com.

If any of the application instructions are unclear or you have questions or concerns about the residency program itself, e-mail I-Park directly at applications@i-park.org , though we would ask that you take a moment to reference the FAQ first.  To expedite processing, use the Subject Line: ‘Application Assistance.’  You may also contact the office at 860-873-2468 from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm (Eastern Standard Time), Monday through Friday.
