Artists/Practitioners submitting proposals for the Thanatopolis Exhibition should be aware of the following constraints:

• The Thanatopolis Exhibition will not involve the erection of permanent structures, major site interventions or any alterations of the landscape that would trigger regulatory scrutiny or the need for government approvals.

• Thanatopolis has a certain conceptual shape to it that will serve as a frame of reference.  However, the concept is evolving and will undoubtedly be challenged and refined by virtue of the exchanges that will occur during the June Symposium.  Applicants should be aware of the possible future need to adjust their proposals to accommodate such changes.  I-Park is also aware that the impact of the proposals themselves will likely alter the overall project in some ways.

• Because of this dynamic, unlike the laissez faire, non-judgmental posture of the Artists in Residence Program at I-Park, applicants may be contacted to discuss the particulars of their proposal in terms of scale, suitability, context and other factors.  The individual creative elements of Thanatopolis must hang together, in some sense, as a coherent whole and participants should be willing to make reasonable adjustments to their proposals or otherwise be prepared to defend them.  Participants should be comfortable working in a collaborative fashion such as this, both with the Thanatopolis concept as well as with the participants from the other disciplines.

• Because of the need to establish some momentum for the project, there are two artists already working on specific aspects of Thanatopolis.  However, these areas (landscape design/aesthetic, memorial sculpture) are not closed to new ideas and additional participants.

• The October Exhibition is intended to be a quality event with a very limited number of executed projects.  At this time, it is expected that no more than 18 individual projects will be presented, not including paper projects.  At that, there is no minimum number of projects that will be brought to realization.  The Selection Panel will only fund those proposals which, in its sole judgment, meet the high standards set for this project.  Therefore, applicants are requested to initially submit a modest amount of material in sketch/concept form (see Application Instructions).  For those projects of particular interest to the Selection Panel, applicants may be contacted and given an opportunity to elaborate on their proposals, should they choose, prior to the final selection.

• While time and space will be provided at I-Park (or nearby) to prepare for and realize the projects, this time and space will be limited.  Until it is determined how many and the types of projects that will be accepted, the accommodations details will necessarily remain vague.
