Partnering with ensemble mise-en, an innovative, energetic New York-based contemporary music collective led by music director/conductor/composer Moon Young Ha, I-Park is hosting this experimental Composers + Musicians Collaborative Residency as part of its 2015 artists-in-residence program. The goal is to enrich the traditional creative process involved in bringing a music project from concept to concert. Typically, the composer toils in deep isolation to create his work, after which, the ensemble is presented with the finished product to be performed as written. In this program, the musicians become deeply engaged in the process and inform the final outcome.
Each of the six composers was asked to write a semi-complete composition for the orchestration decided upon for the residency. The six invited musicians, all active performers from ensemble mise-en, will join the composers in residence and, through numerous readings of the pieces in an intense workshop setting, help to shape those many decisions that will bring the works to completion – and to concert. The collaborations will be facilitated by Moon Young Ha within the nurturing structure of I-Park’s artists-in-residence program. While this is an experiment, it is our belief that the works will be enhanced, aesthetically and in performance quality, by this added investment of time and care. And, because of the intimate, immersive residency setting and the informal sharing of meals and ideas, the bonds of trust and respect between composer and musician will be strengthened.
The program will culminate in a series of 3 concerts. The six new works will be premiered in the sanctuary of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in East Haddam and they will receive their New York premieres at the cell in New York City. Additionally, six totally separate works will, conditions permitting, be performed within the I-Park landscape by the ensemble mise-en musicians following the concert at St. Stephen’s. These compositions for solo instrument, created from scratch during the residency, will result from the pairing of each composer with an ensemble member. The teams will collaborate in the development of these pieces in the context of the fascinating natural and created environments that exist at I-Park.
We hope you will join us at one or more of the performing venues to experience the results of this unique collaborative exchange between the composers + musicians. Judge for yourself whether the experiment was a success!
