Chad Cunha

Not only did Chad Cunha apply twice to the New World School of the Art in Miami, Florida, before getting accepted, but he was also pulled aside three months shy of his graduation and told that he may not graduate. Ironically, in the end, he graduated as Valedictorian. The perpetual pressure from society, bureaucracy and, in this case, educational administration to make artists fit neatly into predetermined categories leads those who present any resistance to be met with backlash. His resistance was the freedom to take risks.

At the New World School of Art, Cunha participated in the honors program, taking a trip to Los Angeles, California, and having the opportunity to tour Disney Studios, visit The Getty Center and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) as well as explore the High Desert Test Sites.  He also participated in an art course at the Florence Academy of Art in Italy, where he learned the fundamentals of drawing and painting from observation with extreme precision.  Following graduation, he was able to take a trip to Spain and Germany, visiting major art collections as well as Documenta 13. Cunha has exhibited his temporary and permanent interactive works in a number of shows including Beyond Paper at the Miami Art Guide, James Hotel, Miami, Florida, HOTBED 2011 during Art Basel, Miami Beach and the Wynwood Art Fair. He received awards, merit-based scholarships, and grants providing him with enough funds to pay for his college tuition in full.
Cunha currently lives and works in New York. Cunha’s art involves site-specific installations that present platforms for playful engagement.
